Situated in the heart of the Gila Wilderness along the headwaters of the Gila River in southwest New Mexico, the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument was established to safeguard the historic Mogollon cliff dwellings.
The town's origins can be traced back to 1860 when three dissatisfied 49ers—Thomas Birch, Colonel Snively, and Hicks—paused for a drink at Bear Creek and stumbled upon gold. News swiftly circulated, drawing more than 700 men to prospect in the vicinity. Strained relations surfaced between the miners and the local Indian population.
Located between Silver City and Deming, City of Rocks offers camping, hiking trails, mountain biking, wildlife viewing, bird-watching, stargazing, picnicking, and a desert botanical sanctuary. The new Visitor Center has unique architecture, a large exhibit space, and state-of-the-art restrooms with hot showers. Visit for an adventure-filled experience!
